A Winter Packing List For Men Who Are Coming To Rome
This is an essential winter packing list for men traveling to Rome for a vacation during the colder months that will help make your trip an enjoyable success.
If you are, or someone else is, packing for your trip to Rome and you want to ensure an exciting vacation, but you are stressed about making sure you pack everything you might need, one thing to keep in mind is that Rome, and really all of the larger cities in Italy, are very modern economies that have anything you might need. This is another way of saying: Beyond a few things, like medicine or your computer, you can buy everything here if you forget to pack something, so don’t stress.
I previously wrote about a complete packing list for men who are coming to Rome, and you should DEFINITELY check it out. This article is more of a seasonal list of items you should consider bringing, in addition to that general list of items in the other article.
What Should Men Wear In Rome In The Winter?
There are a number of things to consider when packing for a winter vacation in Rome and the most important one is that you are traveling in the unpredictable winter cold. As rule of thumb you will want to consider including:
- Sturdy Walking Shoes – I still don’t recommend buying waterproof shoes because even in the winter you will be sweating all day in them and you want something that breathes. Still, stability on the cobblestones will also be important. For me, comfortable shoes with good lateral support will work the best. Consider a hiking shoe or a sneaker with great support.
- A Winter Hat – Most people do not spend an entire week outdoors in the winter, so you will want something to keep your head warm. I would use a baseball hat, but on windy days, this isn’t enough. Bring a nice winter hat and keep yourself warm. Keep in mind that you will need to remove your hat when entering religious sites, but most of these are indoors and not a problem.
- Heavier Pants – In the winter, you will need a pair of pants that are heavier, like jeans, because the winds will go right through a lighter pair of khakis. It doesn’t typically get below freezing, so you don’t need to go as far as lined pants or anything for skiing or snowboarding, just some jeans will suffice.
- Scarves and Gloves – If you own a nice collection of scarves, now is the right time to break them out of the closet. Italians love scarves, so you will fit right in, but they are also a practical addition to your wardrobe. Gloves are also a recommendation, but if you are like me and prefer to keep your hands in your pockets, then you can get by without them.
What Is The Weather In Rome In The Winter?
When I am referring to the Winter, I mean the months of December, January and February, which is the least crowded and coldest period in Rome, but as I mentioned, it rarely goes below freezing. The weather in Rome in December is continuing to cool, with the average low temperatures in Rome at 39°F (3.9°C) and the average high temperatures are still a comfortable 55°F (12.8°C). Rome in January is slightly cooler, with an average low temperature of 37°F (2.8°C) and the average high temperatures are a comfortable 54°F (12.2°C). The weather in Rome in February is starting to turn the corner with average low temperatures at a slightly warmer 38°F (3.3°C) and the average high temperatures are a comfortable 56°F (13.3°C).
Winter Packing List For Men Coming To Rome
As I mentioned, the items listed in this article are specific to winter travel for men coming to Rome, so the following are the same as the Complete Packing List For Men:
Packing Documentation – No Change
Packing Technology – No Change
Packing Entertainment – No Change
As for winter travel, these items are in addition to the ones listed as a part of the Complete Packing List:
Pre-Packing Requirements – It is always a good idea to know about any storms coming that might affect your travel plans, and in my opinion, it is most important in the winter. Make a point of any blizzards or cold snaps and adjust your clothes accordingly. I mentioned it rarely goes below freezing, but it can, and you should know what to expect when you are packing.
Packing Toiletries & Medicine – In the winter you shouldn’t be as concerned about dehydration, but that dry winter air will chaps your lips, so if you are prone to that, be sure to pack some lip balm. Other than that, the basics from the complete packing list should be fine.
Packing Clothing – Obviously, you can forget the shorts from the complete list, but the jeans and heavier pants are quite important. I’ve also mentioned scarves, hats and gloves above, but the important thing to focus on is dressing in layers. For example, instead of one heavy duty winter jacket, consider some long sleeve t-shirts, a fleece and a lighter jacket instead. You will either be walking or going from cold to hot to cold when you enter restaurants or sites, so you will want to be able to shed a layer when necessary.
