Rome in April is an amazing time to visit because of the very seasonable weather, more manageable crowds and the cultural and sporting events across the city.

Is April In Rome A Good Month To Visit?

Because the weather in Rome is continuing to warm up and the crowds are still smaller and more manageable than during peak tourist season, April can be an amazing time to visit Rome. It’s important to remember, however, that the weather in Rome can be unpredictable during April. Starting in late February, the days are warming up from the depths of winter, and they can be sunny and mild. The nights can still be chilly, and even though it isn’t considered to be one of the more rainy months, you haven’t reached the dry season yet.

Technically, April is in the beginning of the tourist season in Rome and my experience is that things do start to heat up in April. The crowds are smaller than during the summer months, but there will still be some lines and crowds at the more popular attractions. That being said, if you plan your itinerary well and prioritize the sites you want to see, you should be able to comfortably enjoy Rome without feeling overwhelmed by crowds or overheated by the heat, like in the summer.

Is Rome In April Cheap?

Italy is one of the cheaper countries in Europe for tourists visiting Rome in what is still considered the “shoulder” season and it can offer some savings as compared to peak season. But you should keep in mind that Rome is a popular destination year-round and prices can still be relatively high. You will probably still be able to find a few remaining discounts on Flights and Hotels, but don’t expect to find any great savings on restaurants or cultural activities.

Additionally, prices can also vary depending on the specific time in April that you plan to visit. For example, prices may be higher during Easter week, which is a popular time for visitors to Rome and Vatican City as Easter (Pasqua) is an important holiday for Catholics.

Because Rome is a popular tourist destination all year round, it’s a good idea to book in advance for your hotels, flights and even restaurants once you arrive. If you are looking for other ways to save money, it’s also worth considering staying in neighborhoods outside of the historic center (centro storico), where you might be able to find more affordable accommodation options and allow you to experience a more authentic side of Rome.

How Is The Weather In Rome In April?

It has been my experience that the temperatures in February are the lowest of the Rome winters, but they have turned higher around mid-month. The weather in Rome in April is delightful and it continues to warm up, so depending on when you arrive, the weather might be great or better.

Is April A Rainy Month In Rome?

The rainy season in Rome is more pronounced in October and November, but keep in mind that February and March are also considered the spring rainy season, so April is still pretty close to the rainy season, but the risk is lower. It is possible to encounter some rain, but the risk is considerably lower than in February and March.

You can probably skip the umbrella because on the off chance it does rain, they are available for sale at every historical site the moment it turns cloudy and they are cheap enough that you won’t mind leaving it in the hotel for the next guest to use. Depending on your hotel, they are also sometimes provided to the hotel guests at no cost.

Is It Cold In Rome In April?

The weather in Rome in April is delightful and improving. The average low temperatures in Rome in April are well above freezing at 46°F (8°C) and the average high temperatures are a comfortable 66°F (19°C). This makes for a delightful experience when you are walking around the city and gives you the option to dine al fresco, which I highly recommend. Nothing says spring to me more than dining outside in Rome in April.

What Foods Are Seasonal In April?

The seasonal foods in April are a continuation of the winter fruits and vegetables, but with some fantastic exceptions. There are new fruits available in April, like Strawberries and something similar to a quince called a Medlar. There are also a couple additions to your choice of vegetables, like: garlic, radishes and cauliflower.

What Are The Important Holidays In April?

  • Easter (Depends On The Year) – This is an important public holiday in Rome and you can expect most of the sites, and most stores, to be closed. Luckily, we have had luck finding restaurants that are open and happy to provide you with a delicious Easter brunch. You will want to confirm if you will be traveling during Easter as it changes from year to year.
  • The Monday After Easter (Depends On The Year) – This is another public holiday that you will need to plan around. It’s a day for picnics and hanging out with friends, but the options for entertainment are limited to the visitor. Again, like with Easter, you will want to confirm if you will be traveling during Easter as it changes from year to year.
  • Rome’s Birthday (April 21) – This is the day set aside to celebrate, according to Roman mythology, the founding of Rome by Romulus on what is today Palatine Hill.
  • Liberation Day (April 25) – This is an important national holiday that celebrates the end of the Nazi occupation of Italy and the fall of Mussolini’s Fascist government.

What Sporting Events Happen In Rome In April?

There are many interesting cultural events in April, and these include art exhibits, festivals, wine and concerts. A very good list of cultural events can be found on the RomeToday website. In addition, there are some international sporting events in April that you might also want to be aware of:

  • The Rose Garden In Rome – Not so much a sporting event but a competition, the opening of the rose garden in Rome is one of the most beautiful signs of spring and shouldn’t be missed. Along the same theme, during the last week of April, the Spanish Steps are beautifully covered in Azaleas and is another amazing sign of spring.
  • Run For Autism (Varies) – This is a 5-10 KM run that starts in the Piazza della Bocca della Verita and whose mission is to bring sports to people with autism where they can overcome their limitations and demonstrate new skills.
  • Roma Appia Run (Varies) – This road race is organized by the National ACSI with the technical support of the ACSI Italia Atletica and the ACSI Campidoglio Palatine. The primary idea was to organize a race starting from the Caracalla spa stadium, next to the Baths of Caracalla, and ending as far as the ancient Appian Way is viable.
  • AS Roma (Multiple) – If soccer/calcio/football is what you are looking for, there are multiple games during April with both Roma and Lazio, so check the AS Roma website to see of there are tickets available for when you will be here in Rome.
