Piazza Navona is in the historical district of Parione, which is in the center of the city. The piazza is built on the footprint of the ancient stadium of Domitian and the size and oval shape of the piazza are the same as the ancient stadium. To stand in the center of Piazza Navona makes it easy to imagine races circling the ancient stadium around what is today 3 of the most beautiful fountains in Rome.
The piazza is centrally located in the ancient city and close to all the sites that a first-time, or regular visitor might be interested in seeing, like: the Pantheon, Castel Sant’Angelo, The Vatican and the Jewish Ghetto.
Where Should I Stay In Rome For The First Time?
In my opinion, staying in the historical center of Rome, like near Piazza Navona, is your best bet. You will be conveniently located near all the major sites and you will have easy access to public transportation and taxis. If, however, you plan on focusing on a single site, like the Vatican or Trastevere, you might be better off staying closer to those sites in order to cut down on travel time.

Piazza Navona is more famous for its amazing beauty. More specifically, in addition to the wonderful structures that surround the piazza, you can also admire the three monumental fountains in the square: the Fountain of the Four Rivers, the Fountain of Neptune and the Fontana del Moro. In addition to the three beautiful fountains, there is also Palazzo Pamphilj, which now contains the Brazilian Embassy, and the Church of Sant’Agnese, built by Francesco Borromini, another of Rome’s great Baroque architects.
