Almost immediately after moving to Rome, I fell in love with a delicious and popular candy known as Pocket Coffee, made by Ferrero. It is a little chocolate candy filled with sweetened espresso coffee that is available almost everywhere you look in Rome. There is also a gelato version that is equally as great, but more on that below.

What Is Ferrero?

If you have even the slightest familiarity with Italian food products, it is pretty likely that you are aware of some of what Ferrero sells. In addition to the Pocket Coffee that we’re talking about here, they sell:

  • Ferrero Rocher hazelnut candies
  • All Nutella related products
  • Kinder Chocolates, Cookies and other sweets
  • And even Tic-Tacs (which I thought were American)

The Ferrero group was founded in 1946 in Alba, a very picturesque town in the north of Italy, by brothers Pietro and Giovanni Ferrero. Today, the Ferrero Group is one of the world’s largest sweet-packaged food companies with well known products sold in more than 170 countries.

Coincidentally, we have a friend who grew up in Alba and she speaks of how the factory around Alba fills the air with chocolate. It makes me think of a real life Willy Wonka factory, but I haven’t found my golden ticket yet, but I’ll keep looking.

What Are The Seasons Of Ferrero Pocket Coffee In Italy?

There aren’t many sweets in the US that are seasonal, but here in Italy, everything seems to have a season and Pocket Coffee is no exception. The way to view it is that there is a winter season and a summer season and the offerings are only available in one season.

As a personal example, we moved to Rome in the summer, but only started enjoying Pocket Coffee a few months later in the fall. At that time, only the small chocolate candies were available. Then, unexpectedly for us, they disappeared. After discussing this with the cashier, we learned that during the summer, only the gelato version is available and we would have to wait until the fall for the candy to return.

More specifically, The chocolate candy returns in October and the gelato runs out around that time. It isn’t exact when the gelato disappears because it is just a matter of when it sells out. They don’t pull it out of the freezers or anything like that. On the other side of the calendar, in April or in the beginning of May, the candies start to disappear and not be restocked and then one day they are gone.

Why Is Ferrero Pocket Coffee Seasonal?

As it was explained to us, it is because of how delicate the outer chocolate shell is and in the blazing summer heat they would melt and become an espresso and chocolate  mess. This is no joke here in Rome, in particular, because we enjoy some chocolate covered cookies that need to be chilled when we get them home after buying them, or it will be a disaster.

The gelato are a delicious replacement during the summer and we keep the freezer fuller stocked in order to survive the summer heat. The trick, for this article, was having the planning and patience to get photos of the Pocket Coffee versions from both seasons, which was difficult because of my need to eat them once I get them home.

How Much Coffee Is In Ferrero Pocket Coffee?

An average cup of espresso contains 63 mg of caffeine per 1 ounce shot, which is about 4x more caffeine than a typical US cup of coffee, per ounce. Each small cube of Pocket Coffee contains 1/3 of a shot of espresso, so there would be approximately 20 mg of caffeine per piece of candy.

What Type Of Coffee Does Ferrero Use?

The classic Pocket Coffee, and the decaffeinated version, contains a blend of Arabica coffee from the best varieties in the world from Brazil, Costa Rica, Santo Domingo and Colombia.

How Many Calories Are In A Pocket Coffee Espresso?

Italian packaging is a little different from the US and one way is because their calories are listed per 100 grams, instead of per individual piece, but the math isn’t too hard. One piece of Pocket Coffee Espresso weighs 12.5 grams, and 100 grams has 440 KCals, so each piece has 55 Calories.

How Many Calories Are In A Pocket Coffee Gelato?

Similar to above, the nutritional breakdown is based on 100 grams and these gelato come in a box of 4 and they weigh in at a comfortable 41 grams each. The result is 142 Calories each bar, which isn’t too bad (in my opinion).

What Is Ferrero Pocket Coffee Espresso To Go?

I left this confection until later in the article because I am not as big a fan of this version. This is an espresso and chocolate drink that is meant to taste like Pocket Coffee Espresso, but without a candy shell. It is in a small plastic container and comes with a straw that you poke through the top. I don’t like using a straw like this because it reminds me of a juice box. The flavor is fine, but for me, the summer Ferrero Pocket Coffee is the gelato.
