However, determining the best time to visit really depends on what you want to experience. This isn’t the standard “It Depends” dodge to a question. Each season in Italy offers unique benefits that need to be considered, like the festive charm of the winter holiday season, to summer’s  busy events calendar.

In this essential guide, we’ll break down Italy’s seasonal differences, including weather expectations, major holidays, and the best things to do in each season. Whether you’re looking to explore Rome, or travel further around Italy, like at the Amalfi Coast, Tuscany or the Alps, this guide will help you plan the perfect Italian getaway.

Winter In Rome (December – February)

One of the most amazing things I have learned since moving to Rome is how short the winter season is. December to February is accurate, if not a little long. At some point mid to late December is when you traditionally turn on your heat. February, which can be rainy, can also be quite seasonal and this year I noticed all the trees budding in our neighborhood.

I mention this because we moved from the northeast of the US where winter can go from November until April without anyone batting an eyelash. It has been a great change for us here in Rome.

Best Month To Visit Rome - Holiday Season

Why Visit Italy In Winter?

Winter is the low season for travel in Italy, meaning fewer crowds and lower prices on flights and accommodations. It’s also a special time of year, especially in major cities like Rome, where holiday lights, Christmas markets, and festive traditions are in full swing.

While northern Italy experiences cold temperatures and snowfall, Rome remains relatively mild. There isn’t typically a snowfall, despite those Instagram pictures from 40 years ago. Also, while there might be fewer outdoor events, the restaurants and museums all remain open. If avoiding crowds is your top goal, visiting in winter might be a great option for you.

Key Seasonal Events And Traditions

  • Christmas & New Year’s Eve (December) – From December 8th until January 6th, Rome (and of course Vatican City) hosts beautiful Christmas markets and midnight Mass services. While the best Christmas markets admittedly are further north, there is nothing like the Christmas season in Rome.
    • Check Out: “Rome In December – Planning Tips For A Perfect Trip To Italy”.
  • Epiphany (January 6th) – Unlike in the US, there is no Santa here in Italy. The festival of La Befana, an Italian holiday tradition, marks the end of the Christmas season and the time to start putting away all the ornaments. Interestingly (to me) it is also the 12th day of Christmas. I never knew when that was as a child.
  • Carnevale (February) – Quite a bit more popular in Venice than in Rome, you might need to travel a little bit to celebrate Carnevale with elaborate costumes and grand parades. In Rome, February is a quiet month and in my opinion, the best time to visit Rome.

Where To Go And What To Do

In Rome, fewer tourists and milder weather make sightseeing more enjoyable. If you were ever discouraged to wait in line for the Colosseum or had trouble getting a reservation at your perfect restaurant, January is the time for you.

Springtime In Rome (March – May)

Spring is definitely on display in Rome during this period. Like in the US and other countries, Spring is also the rainy season, but with a little preparation this shouldn’t turn you against Springtime in Rome.

Why Visit Italy In The Spring?

Spring is one of the best times to visit Italy. The weather is pleasant, flowers are blooming, and the tourist season is just beginning. Crowds are still manageable and cultural events are plentiful.

If you have school-age children and you are debating between coming to Rome in the spring or waiting until summer vacation, stop the debate. Spring is a much better time to visit and you will thank me for the advice when you return home from your trip.

Best Month To Visit Rome - Celebrations

Key Seasonal Events During Roman Spring

  • Easter (March/April) – Although the specific date varies from year to year, spring is the time of Easter in Rome. The Vatican hosts special celebrations and religious processions and rituals take place throughout the city and beyond.
  • Liberation Day (April 25th) – You might not care about this one if you aren’t Italian, but it is good to know if you are visiting on that day because the commemoration engulfs the city and you might have difficulty getting around. Rome commemorates the end of WWII with ceremonies and parades, but to add a little more flavor, it celebrates the end to Fascist rule. Perhaps this is a holiday that the US might adopt in the future?
  • May Day (May 1st) – This is in some ways the equivalent of Labor day, but it is so much more. It is a public holiday that celebrates the workers with labor protests and concerts around Rome. Again, you might not care to celebrate, but you should know about what is closed (or packed with people) if you will be in town on this day.

What to Do During Springtime In Rome

Summertime In Rome (June – August)

Why Visit Italy In Summer?

To be honest, if you have school-age children or a job with limited vacation, you might be restricted on when you can take a vacation. Even though I love Rome in the summer, I’m not the one waiting to enter the Colosseum or standing in a line that fills the piazza outside the Pantheon. It is busy, and from all reports it is getting busier.

Summer is the peak of the Rome tourist season.  With warm temperatures, long daylight hours, and plenty of outdoor activities you might be tempted to follow the crowds. However, it also means crowded attractions and higher prices. If you plan on visiting the Coastal and island destinations, be sure to make reservations before you arrive otherwise you might miss out.

Seasonal Events In Rome

  • Republic Day (June 2nd) – The day commemorates the 1946 Italian referendum in which the Italian people were called to the polls to decide on the form of government following WWII and the fall of Fascism. It is a national holiday, but the main celebration is in the capital Rome with parades and fireworks.
  • Ferragosto (August 15th) – Every year that I’ve been in Italy, I have appreciated the amazing holiday known as: Ferragosto. Italians take a break, and many businesses close while people head to the beach. While the holiday focuses on a single day, the impact can last a month or more. The reason it is important for tourists is that this is the time of year that your favorite restaurant or bakery might be closed, so plan ahead.

Where To Go

Rome is still enjoyable despite the heat, with summer events and open-air concerts. If you plan to be in town long enough for a day trip or weekend getaway, consider the Amalfi coast. If you are in town in August, I would recommend heading out to the beach with the rest of Italy.

If you plan early enough, you might even be able to make a reservation at a hotel or restaurant. Plan accordingly with these guides:

Autumn In Rome (September – November)

Depending on when you visit Rome, it is definitely a period of transition. September is still fairly warm and if you are from the NE of the US like us, it might still seem like summer. At the other end, November is starting to cool down nicely and while nothing like where we came from, it will be cold enough to reconsider eating al fresco.

Why Visit Rome In Autumn?

Autumn is a great time to visit Rome. There are fewer crowds and mild temperatures that are great in which to walk around.

Events And Traditions

The neighboring town of Frascati is the center of the Rome (Lazio) wine region. Coming in Fall will allow you to experience the grape harvest and the related wine tastings. Also, even though they don’t celebrate Thanksgiving here, it is really a unique experience to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal in an Italian restaurant during the day and then have someone say: “Buon Ringraziamento!”

What To Do In Rome In The Fall

Fall in Rome still features beautiful weather with a relaxed atmosphere. There are still plenty of events that you can check out here:
